Covering letters 的意思就是求職信,是簡歷里的一部分,信中可以簡要介紹自己的情況,以及你要申請的職位。或者在你了解某個公司招聘的具體位置後,表達自己有意從事這個職位的意願,說明自己有做好這個職位的經驗和能力。

順便說一下,CV並不是Covering letters 的英文簡寫,CV的全稱是curriculum vitae ,中文意思是簡歷,是英式說法,美國多用resume.

The following format provides a useful overview for a letter:

Briefly introce yourself, state what position you are applying for and where you saw it advertised. For a speculative letter, include the type of work you are seeking.
Explain why you are interested in this type of work, demonstrating an understanding of what it is likely to involve.
Explain why you are interested in working for this particular organisation. Demonstrate enthusiasm and evidence of research into such aspects as their successes, involvements, values or clients.
Highlight how you are suitable for this position. Provide evidence of your key strengths by referring to experiences on your CV. Aim for your key strengths to reflect the requirements of the employer and position.
Take the opportunity, if necessary, to explain any anomalies in your experiences such as a gap or anywhere you do not match the selection criteria. Perhaps explain how any hurdles have developed you in a positive way.

Style
A professional business layout is important, addressed to a named indivial wherever possible. Ring the organisation』s switchboard to request a name if necessary. Aim for one side of A4 with the same quality paper and font style as your CV. A printed letter is the norm these days, although some recruiters may still specify a handwritten one to check out your handwriting. The same rules about checking for spelling, grammar or typos still apply and probably more so on your letter. Your writing style should be formal but try not to use words that are only really found in a thesaurus.

如何寫一篇出色的CV和 Letter
第一部分 求職信 (Cover letter)
在今天,絕大部分僱主指出,他們是從來不會看沒有求職信(Cover letter)的個人簡歷的。因此,求職信是必要的。但求職信不是對個人簡歷的簡單復述,而是禮貌而鮮明的突出自己的目標和要求,促使閱讀者有興趣閱讀你的個人簡歷和推薦信。
求職信的目的和好處在於:
1, 可保證個人簡歷到達正確的閱讀人的桌面。如果招聘廣告上沒有收信人的姓名,我推薦打電話詢問將會處理求職申請的人的姓名(這顯示你的誠意以及專業精神,給僱主深刻印象)。假如不能的話按照以下原則:小型企業—經理(Managing director),中型企業—部門負責人(Head of section/department),大型企業—全體職員或者人事部(personnel or Human Resource Department)。
2, 說服收信者閱讀你的個人簡歷
3, 清楚地表明你對具體哪一個職位感興趣
4, 表明為什麼對該職位有興趣,為什麼你認為自己勝任該職位
5, 提及一到兩點在個人簡歷裡面的內容,以及回應廣告的要求
所以,求職信並不能保證你找到工作,但,做好這一點,它能給你帶來面試的機會,或者至少令僱主打開你的個人簡歷。
那麼,Cover letter要包括那些內容呢,至少有以下幾點。
1, 招聘廣告中給出的收信人姓名,頭銜和地址
2, 你所感興趣的職位以及你從何處得知招聘消息(或許朋友推薦)
3, 用三到四個「項目符號」(如Word工具欄)列舉出你為什麼能勝任該職位的背景和特長,回應招聘廣告的要求。
4, 表明有興趣獲得一個面試的機會,討論申請問題。
5, 檢查拼寫和語法錯誤
6, 千萬不要提及薪酬問題,也不要提及僱主想要或者可能想要的但你又不能達到的技能或要求
7, 除非註明要求手寫,否則應用打字機或者文字處理軟體列印。但個人簽名一定要用手寫(記住這一點不要忘記)
8, 對應不同的申請應用不同的求職信,例如內容、側重點和風格的不同等
9, 注意,Cover letter應力求精簡,除非有特殊情況,否則一律用一張紙完成

第二部分 個人簡歷(CV)
第一, 一般建議:
或許你可以從網上或學校提供的求職指引得到一些寫個人簡歷的模板,但僱主通常對千篇一律的求職信不感興趣。因此,千萬不要復制一些標準的模板。你的CV應該是你自己的,個性化的,但又跟個性化不同。
首先,個人簡歷應該用文字處理軟體來打出,並用質量好的列印機列印。注意不要用太多不同的字體和大小,不要用其它顏色。但推薦用加粗或者下劃線標出少數的重要的關鍵詞,便於僱主找尋他想看到的詞。
其次,不要忘記在計算機上用「拼寫和語法」工具查拼寫錯誤和語法錯誤,或者讓其他英語水平好的朋友檢查。
再者,強烈推薦用Word工具欄的「項目符號」或「編號」。想一想僱主可能半個小時要讀完100封CV,所有CV的下場只有兩者:可考慮或者垃圾桶。因此,你的個人簡歷一定要設計成能快速閱讀,短而精,引起讀者興趣。
還有,針對不同的僱主和要求對個人簡歷作一些輕微而必要的修改,這一點用文字處理軟體是一件簡單的事。
最後,寫好草稿之後,讓你的老師,家人或者你的朋友看,問他們假設他們是僱主的話應如何改動才會好一點。重新再看多幾次,用紅筆修改,使簡歷顯得更精簡,可讀性更高,更容易理解。
第二,動筆之前
坐下來仔細閱讀你想申請的工作的廣告,甚至他們並沒有打出招聘廣告你也可以試一下。列出他們的要求,比較你自己的技能,教育程度,工作經驗等。很多時候,招聘廣告所給的信息並不足夠,除了站在他們的角度想像一些可能的要求之外,你還必須對相關的僱主和/或其公司的情況,例如公司結構,產品,成功之處,發展宏圖等進行搜索作一些了解。搜索的途徑主要有:網際網路,其公司的正式文件、宣傳資料、報告,報紙報道等。
第三,書寫風格(Style)
大體上有兩種。第一種是按時間循序式(Chronological),所有的信息包括在鮮明的標題下,例如教育程度、工作經驗等。這一種方法容易入手一些。第二種稱為技能針對式(Skills Based),就是根據技能要求列標題,所有個人信息分別列舉在相應標題下。這一種比較高難度。
第四,簡歷長度和紙張格式
1-2頁。一定不要超過三張A4紙(特殊工種除外),因為僱主沒有那麼耐心和時間看完你的業績。注意,大部分情況下用正式的白色紙張和黑色字體,但某些情況可以改變。例如你申請的是電視台節目或者圖像設計等相關工作時,可以考慮用彩色紙張,別出心裁的設計等。
第五,組成部分
1,個人資料(pERSONAL DETAILS)
包括姓名(建議用英文名字加上自己的姓以便聯系和稱呼),電話號碼,電子郵件地址,聯絡地址(因在信封上和求職信中已包括,可以考慮不列出),生日(各地文化不同,通常沒必要列出),性別(如果你用英文名的話不必列出),還有個人網址(如果你覺得製作得不錯的話)。沒必要列出國籍(在國內的話多此一舉,在國外的話此舉會降低你的面試機會)
2,教育程度(EDUCATION)
主要列出大學或者專科的學習情況。所學科目,所得學位或畢業程度,每年所學的跟求職工種相關的課程,還有自己參加的相關項目(project),所寫的論文(Thesis/dissertation)等。另外如果獲得獎學金或其他嘉獎的話不妨列出。
高中畢業情況很簡要的列出,比高中遠的學歷沒必要列出。
建議按照由近到遠的時間循序列出。
3,工作經驗(WORK EXpERIENCES)
列出你最近的工作經驗。給出你僱主的名字,你自己的職位,還有非常重要的是,你在工作崗位上所作的成績和貢獻。如果沒有突出的成績,可以列出你的職能,例如接待多少客戶,完成多少項目,協助完成多少項公司交易等。
另外,只要是與所求職位相關的工作經驗,即使是很短期的part-time工作,也不妨把它列出來。
4,技能長處(SKILLS)
包括語言能力,計算機水平和經驗,有否駕駛照等
5,個人興趣(INTREST / EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES)
簡要地列出你的一些個人興趣,例如體育項目(如果你跟僱主的興趣相同的話更佳)、集體活動、志願工作等,尤其是如果你在這些活動中擔任領袖(leadership)的話。注意一定要簡練。舉個例子,如果你曾擔任系籃球隊隊長的話,僱主沒有興趣知道具體你什麼時候擔任,打過幾場比賽,贏過幾場比賽等。假如他們對這些有興趣的話會在面試的時候問你。
這一部分可以讓僱主從側面了解你的群體協作程度和正面的社交性格。
6,推薦信和/或推薦人(REFERENCES/REFEREES)
通常列出兩個名字,一個來自大學,另一個來自任何工作環境(全職/part-time/義工)。如果沒有的話,可以列出對你非常了解的比你年長的家庭朋友。然後給出他們的職位,工作電話和夜間電話(事先必須獲得他們的同意)。
7,可選項(Optional extras)
在開頭可以採用個性化的聲明(personal profile/Objective statement),用兩到三個句子概括你的能力,資格,希望和計劃。這一點可以引起僱主閱讀的興趣。
另外,你還可以在簡歷上加一張你自己的照片(掃描或者在文檔粘貼)。但照片必須是積極的照得很好的,而且是「活潑」的(不要看起來病態、囚態、魔態或者古板)。

對於某些工作,僱主會先發給你相關申請表格。這時你仍然需要寫一封求職信(Covering letter),以及你的個人簡歷(CV)(除非僱主有表明不必要)。
注意,填寫表格與寫CV一樣,要求干凈和清晰,用黑色鋼筆或圓珠筆(便於復印)。
推薦:用另外的紙張寫出你的答案,或者先把表格復印下來,在復印件上寫和改動,最後確定才把它抄到正件。
完成之後,復印一次然後保留復印件,以備面試之用。
註:可能的話,保留所有已發送的求職信,申請表格和個人簡歷,以及打電話詢問的紀錄和你所詢問的人的姓名,或者把其保存到電腦里。
第八,面試(INTERVIEW)
學會如何把握一個面試機會同樣是十分重要的。你可以從圖書館或者網際網路上找到一些面試常見的問題,然後讓你的老師,同學或者朋友跟你進行練習。
到了真正面試時,積極和自信(但不要過於自信),以及端正的衣冠和禮貌是必要的。面試過程要謙虛,語言清晰,直截了當。與考官的眼神接觸建議在六成到八成五之間。
如果你被拒絕的話,善意的僱主通常會回顧面試的過程,告訴你如何提高關於個人簡歷和面試技巧。否則你大可以虛心地請教他/她需要改進的地方,以便以後吸取教訓。而且,說不定,僱主還會因此保留對你的關注。所以,如果你以消極方式對待失敗的話,你會給僱主一個很差的印象,不但以後不會有機會,而且你永遠不能由此吸取教訓,迎接下一個挑戰。
第三部分 推薦信
由前公司和/或畢業院校以正式信函(帶信頭)給出最佳。推薦信的有無以及好壞取決於你平時的表現和社交能力,因為老師,學校和公司不可能為每一個學生或員工都寫推薦信,也不可能都寫得那麼好。如果沒有的話請一位熟悉自己的長者也可以。但注意千萬不要作假,憑空捏造。
第四部分 重大的嘉獎或成績的復印件
假如有的話是大有幫助的。但注意這些嘉獎和成績必須是跟你所申請的工種相關的,否則等於浪費。
值得一提的是,除了以上看報紙寄求職信等消息的方法外,還有一種最直接而且事實證明是最有效的求職方法,就是直接上門。但這種會丟掉你很多「面子」。
瞄準你想進入的公司,或許列一個公司地址列表,准備好個人簡歷和推薦信以及求職信,逐一拍門。來到接待處直接說明你想找工作,要求見一見經理。對一些正式的公司來說,如果經理在場的話會給你2--5分鍾的時間,然後你必須准確地把握你的短暫時間和語言能力,說出你的大意,並要求留下你的個人簡歷和推薦信以及求職信。如果經理不在的話,接待處職員會讓你填好一張表格,然後回去等消息。
根據一些國家的法律,公司和僱主沒有權利拒絕求職者要求填求職表格的請求,不管該公司有沒有登招聘廣告。甚至要求僱主必須以書信或者電子郵件的格式給求職者一個答復。
千萬不要以為這樣就會成功,你必須不斷的碰釘子,不斷的接受失敗,然後從失敗中鍛煉,你會學會如何跟公司接待處的職員溝通,如何在與經理的短暫的談話中直截了當,給他一個好的印象。
這樣,可能你會經歷100次的失敗,但很有可能你會在第101次時成功。記住,不要放棄。
最後,一封出色的求職信和優秀的個人簡歷並不是成功的保證,但卻是非常重要的成功的第一步,尤其值得把它做得最好。

8. 如何寫求職信Cover Letter_求職信

9. 投稿時要Cover Letter,是個什麼東東

Cover letter中文叫做投稿信,是在投稿的時候寫給編輯的信,作用跟古時候拜訪人家用的拜帖有點相似。如果把期刊編輯形容成住在高牆大院里的名門望族,那投稿人就是希望給伯樂相中的無名小輩,這么說來拜帖一定要精緻醒目有特色。不過如果作者已經是業內大牛了,估計投稿信是可以隨意一些的。

雖說文章能不能發表靠的還是科研價值本身,但是投稿信也是很重 要的。在現在發表的文章越來越多,權威期刊不缺稿源的情況下,責任編輯做的是擇優錄用,先淘汰掉一部分感覺上價值不大的稿件。如果投稿信沒有含什麼有用的信息,文章一眼看上去又沒有太多吸引力,一些責任編輯就會很快做出拒稿決定。當然用的是非常委婉的說法,拒稿信用的也是統一模板。比如:

「文章標題」

但是實際上,這篇第二天就被責任編輯拒稿的文章其實符合期刊發表的研究方向,因為有幾篇相關的文章就是發表在該期刊上。不過被拒了也就拒了,再去辯解也毫無意義。不過好奇之下,還是去google了一下責任編輯的背景,主要是做光學的,跟文章所屬的電磁方向雖然是一大類,但還是有所區別。再回頭看那個投稿信,用的就是以前的模板,只是用兩句話簡要介紹了一下文章的主要結果。模板如下:

Dear editor,

We would like to submit our manuscript entitled 「<文章標題>」, which we wish to be considered for publication in <期刊名>.

There are couplers of results in this paper may be found interested by the general readers. <然後文章的主要結果>

Thank you very much for considering our manuscript for potential publication.

Best wishes.

雖然投稿信也用兩句話說明了一下文章結果的價值,但是在這種責任編輯只是大同行的情況下, 如果這兩句話不能打動他,那麼他就不一定能夠認同文章的價值,就會直接作出拒稿的決定。

所以在重新投其他的期刊的時候,就意識到原先投稿信的分量還不夠,還要加上一段文字說明為啥文章適合發表在該期刊上。上個月就有一個影響因子還不錯的期刊的編輯給大家發了一個郵件,明確說明了,要是在投稿信裡面沒有加上這些文字,文章會被直接拒稿。

最能反映適合程度的當然是列出自己已經在該期刊上發表的文章,然後說明這兩篇文章是有相關性的。如果沒有過往記錄呢,找出幾篇該期刊最近2,3年發表的,被引用次數還不錯的文章列舉上去也是很有用的。5年前甚至10年前的就不要列了,因為現在期刊的scope都在不斷地調整中,以前的熱門方向,也許現在期刊已經看不上了。投稿信加上了這部分之後,重投了另外一個影響因子相當的期刊,文章很快被送審,很快給錄用了。雖然不一定是投稿信帶來的差異,但是還是願意在心裡認為投稿信也是要用心去寫的。

不過也要記住,投稿信不要寫得太長,最好在一頁內把重要的東西說清楚。寫得太長,編輯也會沒有耐心看的。

有些人建議在投稿信中把推薦的審稿人也加上。這個視情況而定,如果期刊投稿的時候本身就要求填寫幾個推薦的審稿人,那麼就不用佔用投稿信的空間了。但是如果投稿系統沒有這一項的話,那在投稿信加上會更好一些。提供的信息可以是審稿人的頭銜、姓名、地址和電子郵件。記得多次確認一下,電子郵件是人家有效的而且是常用的。最後,若還是不放心, 可以請專業的論文潤色公司如英論閣www.enago.cn提供協助
