1、第一種自傳式
即將學習階段的經歷有選擇性的描述，闡述自己的能力特點。
2、第二種是敘事式
通過一件事情引出全文，來展現該事件中自己的特點和能力，這是國外學生常用的形式。 3、第三種是專業式
主要自己研究背景來展現自己的專業研究能力，主要是針對本科生申請研究生階段的PS。 PS從形式來說就是總分總模式，一般分為開頭、主體和結尾三部分。
中間部分圍繞主題層層展開，詳敘文字，填充內容，展現自己; 開頭部分要足夠吸引人的眼球，先聲奪人，能夠吸引人繼續讀下去，同時點明主題;
結尾既要回扣主題，又要提供最後的「透視」，但是不要僅僅對前文進行重復，也不要添加新東西。 從內容方面而言，最基礎的是必備6W，即回答六個「為什麼」，即為什麼選擇這個專業，為什麼選擇這個項目，為什麼選擇這個學校，為什麼適合這個專業，為什麼適合這個項目，為什麼適合這個學校。 圍繞這些話題，將文章展開完善起來，內容精彩、觀點獨到。
還要注意一點的是PS雖是個人陳述但一定要和個人介紹分開，不要一味誇獎自己的優點和過人經歷，而忽略了對於專業選擇上的闡述，招生官有時候在乎的並不是你本人有多厲害，而是你對於選擇專業的喜好及獨有的見解。
PS從寫作手法上來說要有起承轉合，所謂「起」就是要從宏觀上給自己一個定位，為整個文章做個基調。
接下來就是要「承」，從文章宏觀基調過渡到用具體的理由說服對方錄取你。
「轉」也可以成為升華，結合自身情況和將來學習的項目，對自己的未來有一個怎樣的期待和規劃。 「合」對前文進行提煉，照應開頭的基調，做到首尾呼應，這樣才做到一氣呵成，整個文章渾然一體。 此外，PS段落注意有長有短，有輕有重，有主有次，字數一般在800-1000字左右，切忌重復啰嗦。這樣，才能將PS撰寫的較為完美，值得一讀。
總之，完成後的PS應給人一種行文流水，從容自如的感覺。既不過分誇大自我，也不長篇大論沒有主次，而是一份獨家專屬的個人陳述。
