一般來說，求職信是屬於書信范疇，所以，格式應當符合書信的基本要求，主要包括稱呼、正文、結尾、署名、日期、附錄共六個方面的內容

I. 海員面試時的英語自我介紹
船東初次見面
見到船東是應向船東打招呼、禮貌（Polite）、簡捷（Comcise）、熱情（Enthusiastic）。
面試前留給船東的第一印象往往是剛剛與船東見面時留下的。經驗告訴我們，很多船員盡管英文不錯，可是往往不知道如何和船東恰當地打招呼，從而影響了自己的面試成績。其實，最常見的打招呼辦法就很有效。進考官面試房間後，切勿長時間東張西望，而要在外派公司的引導人員的示意下，坐到指定的座位上。然後，通常是由外派公司的人員互相介紹你和面試你的船東。在介紹完後，你要向考官主動打一下招呼，說一聲「你好！」或「How do you do?」
及「I am John, very glad to meet you here」。這里要提醒您的是，你落座後，一定要看看對面坐著幾位考官。在打招呼時，要和每個人打招呼，包括身體主動前傾，和每個人握握手，或有禮貌地和每個人點點頭。千萬不能忘了其中的一個或幾個。在打完招呼後，要回到指定的座位，端莊坐下。坐下後，通常船東考官會首先向你提出問題，要你回答。
若對方沒有立即向你提問題，你可以自己首先打破僵局，最好的方法是主動介紹一下自己，若外派公司已經把你介紹給考官了，你在自我介紹時要介紹那些別人介紹你時沒有向考官提供的信息，比如你的職位、你的姓名、你來自中國的哪個省份或城市等等。但自我介紹時，要言簡意賅，切忌長篇大論。
主動熱情地和考官交流會使自己易於被考官接受和喜歡。一般認為，熱情是做好一項工作的非常重要的前提條件之一。但是，熱情要有個度，開放自己的精神空間也要有度。面試的背景要求考官和考生之間要有一定的距離。如果考生和考官過於親密，容易讓人產生動機不純或交際態度不穩重的看法。想與考官見面熟的急於求成的做法是不妥當的。既要主動接近，又要保持一定的距離，這就是「熱情」的全面含義。
面試時表現
1． 基本要求：友善（Friendly）、真誠（Sincere and Faithful）、不卑不亢、幽默（Humorous）、謹慎（Wariness）
面試就是你和船東溝通談話的過程。手足無措、東張西望、精神過度緊張，以及坐資過於隨便都是十分忌諱的。每次面試之前，不論我們外派公司怎樣提醒，總有一些船員會表現得手足無措。很多海員，尤其是第一次接受面試的船員，面試時精神緊張是很普遍的現象。有時，應試船員手勢過多，甚至說到激動時手指直指船東；有的唾液飛揚；有的不自然地翹起了二郎腿，好象他在面試考官一樣。這些都會給船東留下很不好的印象。筆者的建議是，想要解除自己面試時的緊張感，最好要讓自己有一定的面試經驗。聽說，很多船員為了讓自己有面試經驗，盡管沒有船東面試的實戰經驗，卻通過去其他非船員公司的其他職位面試來學面試經驗。還有的船員在面試前反復聯系握手、自我介紹，並讓別人評判自己的表現，我認為這是克服面試緊張的非常好的辦法。
2.面試中，考官說話時要仔細傾聽、不搶話、不說多餘的話
語言過多是面試成功的大敵。很多船員因為說話太多而沒有成功。這樣的事例不勝枚舉。應該留給考官問更多的問題，而自己主要的任務是能夠回答這些問題。記得某公司一國外客戶前來面試船員。某一應試輪機長職位的應試者的英語和資歷都特別好。該輪機長在前的准備也非常認真充分，甚至在面試前為了再過一遍材料而直到半夜才睡。第二天面試時，當考官提問了一個問題，他便回答了約10分鍾；而第二個非常簡單的問題，該輪機長居然聯想到他很多經歷，講了足有半小時，且回答的內容遠遠超出了問題的答案。最後，我們看見一個考官的眉頭皺地越來越緊，而另外一個考官乾脆睡著了，而我們這位輪機長根本就沒有注意到，依然滔滔不絕，當然，這個輪機長面試是否成功就不言自明了。
其實，面試時，答非所問，滔滔不絕的船員很多。筆者事後了解到，很多船員之所以想多答一些，是想讓船東 對自己有更深的印象，更是為了展示一下自己的「實力」。而這恰恰是考官不喜歡的。為什麼呢，試想一下，如果幹部船員面試說話那樣婆婆媽媽，他工作時可能會更是如此，而這種管理人員下屬、上司和同時是不喜歡的。這也許是大多數認得共識。總之，船東提問時要仔細傾聽，即使你知道考官下一個問題或下一句話是什麼，也一定要等到船東的問題結束時再回答，而不要搶話說，或問題答案遠遠超出適當的范圍。
對於自己不知道的問題，要實事求是。其實，作為船員，即使你在學校學到的理論知識再雜扎實，船上實踐知識再豐富，仍可能會在面試中遇到答不上來的問題。硬著頭皮亂說一通，掩飾自己的無知，這是極不明智的；迴避問題東拉西扯不相乾的事情，也是下策。最明智的措施是坦白承認自己不懂。你可以說： 「I am sorry,but I really have no idea about your question.If possible,could you give me hints to the answer to the question?」
待人家給了一些啟示或暗示而你仍然不能回答時，就不要讓人家提供更多的暗示或提示了，而應該大大方方地告訴人家： 「I am sorry ,I can not get the answer to your question.」這就足夠了，而萬萬不可以一言不發，任沉默繼續下去，因為沉默的時間越長，應試者通常會更加緊張。
還有，並不是每個考官都是經驗豐富的船長或輪機長，有時他們提的問題也許聽起來有些外行。但是，即便如此，也要謙虛地回答這些問題，而不要說人家的問題有問題或對人家瞧不起的感覺或神情。
3. 回答問題要注意條理性
考官提出的問題可能會有各種各樣類型。至於一般常識性問題，不需太多思考就可以回答了；而對於比較復雜的問題，首先一定要仔細傾聽，把問題的內容理順一下，這在英語面試中特別重要。而對於特別負責不是一兩句能回答完整的問題，一定要讓船東給你一點思考的時間。你可以說：「I am sorry. I haven』t got your idea. But if possible, I would like to think about it for a short moment and then I would give you my answer.」我們的經驗說明，對於那些重要職位，船東考官往往要他們回答一些ISM和SMS程序管理(proceres)的問題，對這樣的問題，不稍做思考，很難回答得盡善盡美。在回答負責問題時，答案的條理性非常重要，你可以用Firstly,secondly,thirdly …lastly之類的連詞來組織你的語言和內容。
還有一種面試題可能是你很難用語言回答清楚。這尤其是在問到某些機器或設備的工作原理時。比如說，考官可能會問輪機員：「Please describe the working mechanism of a purifier(compressor/oily water separator /fresh water generator/generator,etc)。我們發現，很多考官提的問題都涉及到這方面。遇到這樣的問題時，首先要仔細考慮，然後，若覺得很難用語言回答，可要求考官允許你畫圖解釋。所以，希望大家在上場之前最好准備一張紙和一支筆，以便在解釋時隨時使用。其實很多復雜的輪機和機器原理用畫圖的方式表達既基礎又簡明扼要。
總之，條理清楚、內容完備是考官最欣賞的。
4.不要問及考官的個人或公司的隱私（Private matters）
考官和你交流時，他可能會問到你很多個人情況。但是，如果考官詢問船員太多個人隱私方面的問題，應試者不要魯莽拒絕，而要稍微客氣一些。比如，你可以說：「If you do want to know the answer,I will tell you ;but if you do not mind ,I would rather keep it secret.」這樣說完，你向他微笑一下，以示友善。但一般而言，考官不會提問太多讓你難以啟齒的問題。
但是，作為應試者，千萬不要向考官提問他（們）的個人情況，尤其不要觸及到人家的家庭、收入、具體職位等方面的隱私。向考官詢問私人問題，會招致很大的反感，因為世界很多文明的人們都很忌諱別人打探自己的隱私。至於船東公司的情況，如果考官請你提些問題，你還是可以問的；如果沒有明示你可以提問的話，也盡量少問。其實，你想了解的關於考官、你的工資和福利待遇、船東公司，甚至要上的船的大致情況，幾乎外派公司都可以在面試以外的時間向你提供，你絕對沒有必要在船東面試你時向船東提問。
另外，也盡可能不要問及考官所代表的公司的隱私。船東公司的隱私包括該公司所僱傭的其他國籍船員的工資水平、公司是如何應對ITF的、公司其他業務如何、公司的資金狀況如何。當然，如果考官主動向你介紹這方面的情況並歡迎你提問題的話，你還是可以提問這方面問題的，但是，最好不要是特別敏感的問題，也不要佔用人家太多的時間，因為船東面試時本來就很累，何況有很多船員在後面焦急地等待呢。其實，外派公司會在這方面了解很多。如果你真的很好奇，或認為這些信息涉及到你的個人利益，你可以向外派公司詢問這些情況。
5.注意自己的肢體語言（Body Language）
所謂肢體語言是指人的肢體動作所傳遞的內心的想法或精神狀態。在面試中，肢體語言也就是面試者的動作和舉止。觀察應試者肢體語言是考官考察面試者心態及性格特點的一個非常重要的方面。在面試時，應試者應該正確使用肢體語言來和考官溝通。這包括：用點頭的方式讓考官明白你聽懂了他的問題或對考官的見解表示同意；用微笑的方式表示你對考官的善意以及你一直在認真傾聽考官的問題；適當地在椅子上向前欠一下身（或者向考官挪近一點）來表示你非常專注，並對問題非常感興趣；偶爾用手勢來強大你講的某件事或某個觀點。但是，上述肢體語言的使用過程中，切勿矯枉過正。
下面一些肢體語言被視為不雅的行為:身體扒在桌子上或過分前傾、衣服口袋裡叮當作響；手指在桌子上敲，或胳膊在扶手上動；擺弄自己的頭發、首飾或手錶等；揪耳朵、鬍子或鬢角等；翹二郎腿；面部神經抽動；在椅子上搖晃個沒完沒了；目光在室內不停地掃視；心神不定地擺弄衣服；來回擦嘴、鼻子或嘴與鼻子之間的位置；絞扭雙手、擺弄手裡的東西或指甲；咬抓耳撓腮；抓弄手指等等。為了保證自己在面試時有正確的坐姿和身體語言，面試前練習非常必要。所謂面試前練習，就是你自己表演，讓另外一個人來評判你的表現和動作，並提出他個人的意見，以便你作出矯正。在面試練習檢查中，既要注意查找絕對不能出現的動作，也要明確地找到你要使用的肢體語言。肢體語言的成功運用，會使你看上去專心、熱情且粉腸重視考官的面試。
6.幽默風趣
無論在什麼背景下，幽默風趣的人總會左右逢源、得心應手。對於船東面試來說，幽默風趣尤為重要。因為絕大多數考官都來自千里之外的不同國度，在異國他鄉，聽到一些幽默風趣的話語，會使他們消除出差的勞累和工作的緊張。比如，國外某船東問某一年輕實習生：
Are you married? Why do you want to be a seaman? (你結婚了嗎？為什麼你想當一名海員？)這本是一個看上去非常嚴肅的問題。
該實習生答到：
No,not yet .But I have got a girlfriend. I won』t marry until I finish one-year working on board. Money can make me more handsome and attractive to my wife .That is why I want to work for a year and get some money before I marry my girlfriend. (意思是說：我還沒有結婚。但我有個女朋友，我要等到完成一年的合同後再結婚。金錢能使我對女友來說更加美麗和富有吸引力，所以我要上船上工作賺錢。)
當然，幽默也要有度，不要隨意和考官開玩笑，這很重要。
7.面試中「二戒」（Two Mustnots）
一戒逞強好勝、言辭激烈、耍小聰明。有的船員一入面試場所無拘無束、神采飛揚，處處顯示比別人高一等，好象什麼問題都難不倒的樣子。不管人家考官願不願意，主動上前握手，然後四平八穩地就坐；或對考官提出的問題表現出輕蔑不在話下的神情，回答問題時總喜歡帶上一些諸如：「I thind…」或「Yes ,I know,I know.」「No problem.」之類的口頭禪，不管對錯均誇誇其談。本來有些問題自己確實不知道答案，卻故作聰明，東拉西扯亂講一通，寧可答跑了題而不願意做個老實人。有的甚至和考官爭得面紅耳赤。這樣不但可能會鬧出笑話，還可能會讓考官覺得你為人飄浮，虛多於實，性格激動，多血質，也會認為，你對面試和考官提的問題乾脆就不重視。其實，表現如此的人實際工作和生活中很容易和別人發生沖突。
還要提醒的是，在回答問題時，尤其是除了船長、輪機長以外的職位，問題也不要太盡善盡美，船東有時會認為，太聰明、太理性化的人是無法在船上幹活的。
二戒孤芳自賞、態度冷漠。有的船員平時性格孤僻、對人冷淡、心事重重，而可能把這種性格特點帶到了考場，在面試中表情冷淡、不能與考官進行較好的配合，缺乏必要的熱情和親切感。其實，所有的船東都希望未來選擇的船員在船上能夠和他人和睦相處、與人為善、團結互助，使人感到輕松愉快，因為這樣可以提高工作效率，更能保證船舶行駛的安全。所以，即使你平時性格孤僻，在面試中也要擅加克服，否則面試過程必然會氣氛沉悶，問題機械呆板，很難說你有成功的機會
和考官道別
在面試結束時，考官往往會用一定的語言來提醒面試已經結束了，如考官可能會說：「Thanks for your coming.This is all I want to know.」或「Thank you very much.We』ll discuss about you and make our dicision later.」這說明考官的面試結束了。如果你還有非常重要的事情要了解的話，你一定告訴考官給你一點時間。你可以說：「I am sorry,may I ask you a question ?」在徵得考官的同意後，再提問。在你走之前，如果考官伸出手來要和你道別，你一定要馬上伸過手來和考官握一下手。最主要的是，不要忘了感謝考官為你花費了面試時間，同時，也要表示出你對公司及職位的興趣。可以說：「Thank you very much for your kindness in taking time to interview me.I am really very interested in the jobs and your great company.」至少要說聲「Thank you indeed」。但是，如果考官無意和你握手道別的話，也不要勉強和考官握手。另外，和考官道別後，不要馬上急於離開面試房間，而要回頭看看自己曾經坐過的卓椅，看是否落了什麼個人的東西沒有、所坐過的椅子是否恢復了原位。確保帶走了所有個人物品後，再從容離去。
很多船員面試完後，對面試結果非常關心，甚至當面就問考官能否錄用他。我們認為，這是很好失禮貌的事情。通常而言，外派公司在向船東提供面試船員候選人時，很少提供的是差額人選，而更多情況下是差額的，以便船東有大的挑選餘地。這就是說，考官即使對你再感興趣，也要等面試完所有候選人後，也一定要等到船東在充分考慮後才能拿出結論。面試完後馬上讓船東作出是否錄用的決定，勢必會使考官非常尷尬。
最後，在沒有考官明示或暗示面試已經結束的情況下，應試者本人不能主動問考官面試是否結束。如果催促考官面試結束的話，很多考官理解你對面試很不耐煩，或對面試看得非常輕，這對考官是十分不禮貌的行為
